Students collect shoes to support clean water projects

Thanks to Ivy Tech’s Students for Nursing Excellence, readers can turn used shoes into water. The nursing students are holding a shoe drive for WaterStep’s Shoes for Water program (waterstep.org/shoesfor water/). Any and all types of shoes will be accepted, regardless of condition, as long as they are free from mold or mildew.

The public can drop off shoes at collection boxes located throughout buildings on the Ivy Tech Lafayette campus beginning Oct. 5 through Oct. 17. Ivy Tech’s Lafayette campus is located at 3101 S. Creasy Lane. Shoes can be dropped off in Lafayette Monday through Friday, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., Friday 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Saturday 8 a.m. to 12 noon.

Waterstep sells the donated shoes to an exporter who supplies locally owned businesses in developing countries. The proceeds are used to fund clean water projects around the world. The shoes provide many uses beyond funding water purification projects. Unwanted shoes are kept out of landfills, provide affordable footwear to people in developing countries, and build the economy of local communities.
