Mildred R. Barber

Mildred “Millie” Rose (King) Barber, 96, formerly of Burlington, passed away Tuesday, July 26, 2022, at Wellbrooke of Kokomo.

She was born on Jan. 28, 1926, at home on the King family farm in Union Township, Vanderburg County, Ind., to Lena Mae (Johnson) King and Richard W. King. She graduated from Reitz High School in Evansville, Ind., in 1944 and next graduated from Deaconess School of Nursing, Evansville, as part of the Army Nurse Cadet Corps in 1947. On April 25, 1947, she married John Jean Barber of Burlington, Ind, and he preceded her in death on June 20, 2019.

Millie lived in or near Burlington with John for 72 years of married life. He was a teacher and ran a poultry and egg business. She helped with the business by answering the phone and doing all the accounting. She was a faithful member of the Burlington Church of Christ for 75 years. She read the Bible daily and was a strong prayer warrior. She loved flowers, especially roses. She raised and gifted beautiful hybrid tea rose bowls with the elderly and sick, along with cards. She loved to read and do crossword puzzles.

She has been proclaimed by every member of the family to be the best blueberry pie baker ever! Millie could be counted on to bring a massive plate of deviled eggs to all family gatherings and always had a cookie jar full of Oreos for her grandkids. She was a wonderful wife, mother, grandma, and great-grandma who loved her family.

When John retired from teaching, they spent over 20 winters in Naples, Fla., and would walk the beaches every day. She also loved the beaches of South Haven, Mich., in the summers.

Millie is survived by her two daughters, Dottye Barber Robeson (Carl) and Terri Barber Marcellino (Paul), both of Camden; two grandsons, Kurt Robeson (Nikole) of Zionsville, Todd Robeson (Pam) of Norman Okla.; three granddaughters, Katie Marcellino VanSloten (Dustin), Lara Marcellino Chase (Daniel), Dana Marcellino McKinnis (Neil); seven greatgrandsons, Luke and Payt (Todd) Robeson, Chase, Noah, Joel (Kurt) Robeson, and Oscar and Asher (Dana) McKinnis.

She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, two sisters, Lu and Frances King; and sister-in-law, Mary Jo Barber Smith.

Service was held Saturday, July 30, at Stout & Son Funeral Home—Neptune Chapel, Burlington, Ind., with Pastor Paul Marcellino officiating. Burial followed in Burlington Cemetery.

Contributions may be made in Millie’s memory to the Robeson/Barber Scholarship Fund for Teachers through Carroll County Community Foundation, or to the Kokomo Rescue Mission.
