Editor’s note: In last week’s column, a photo appeared with a group of men who were taking a break from a building project. The Comet has learned they were building the Parks Building, which is now the Burlington Boathouse, and not the former school building.

10 YEARS AGO

History and scenery will highlight the Indiana Covered Bridge Society’s tour this weekend of Howard and Carroll counties. Adams Mill Covered Bridge and Lancaster Covered Bridge are the two existing covered bridges in Carroll County. Adams Mill Inc. is receiving the state group in Carroll County and inviting the public to special events. A talk by Carroll County historian Bill Brown will be given in front of Adams Mill at 1 p.m. on April 29. A narrated walk by Bonnie Maxwell and David McCain around the Adams Mill oxbow will follow.

Carroll County will observe “Pay It Forward Day” on Thursday, April 26. Don’t forget to pass along a good deed on that day!

Eight-year-old Daisey Mae Rostron of Camden will be on the hit TV show, “Toddlers and Tiaras,” April 25.

Carroll High School won the Hoosier Heartland Conference Math Contest on April 18. This is the 14th year in a row Carroll has won the contest.

25 YEARS AGO

The 1997 Delphi Art Show, “Art Around the World,” will be presented May 4-9 at Delphi Community High School. The 41st annual exhibit is cosponsored by the DCSC Visual Arts Department and Tri Kappa Sorority. Featured artist at the show is Mike Floyd, a 1982 DCHS graduate and professional artist.

The 1st Annual Carroll County Flower & Garden Fair was held Saturday at Flora Community Park.

Delphi attorney George Obear was recently recognized for his contributions to the Carroll County Wabash & Erie Canal Association at the group’s annual meeting.

Camden Lions Club will have a fundraiser auction Friday evening at 5 o’clock in the Camden Community Center. All items in the auction have been donated by area residents and businesses. Part of the proceeds from the auction will help pay for construction of a smokehouse that teaches children fire safety.

Senior Delphi Oracle swimmer Jennifer Brodar has been named to the first team Academic All-State by the Indiana Coaches of Girls Sports Association.

Dennis Alexander of Burlington competed in the Boston Marathon. He finished 1,119th out of 8,910 who completed the 26.2 mile road race. His finish time was 3:05.40

50 YEARS AGO

The Town of Flora was honored for its Centennial year by the Delphi American Legion at the annual awards night Monday.

The 40th annual Delphi Relays will be held Saturday afternoon at Hillcrest Field. Almost 500 high school tracksters from 23 teams will compete in the three classes.

Mrs. Rosemary Hamilton of West Lafayette, former news writer for the Delphi Journal, has had her second story published in the Cosmopolitan. Her fiction story, entitled “A Vision of Halos,” is in the May issue of the magazine.

E.R. Pressler, president of the Flora Town Board, announced Friday that the town was withdrawing the ordinance that was passed last December taking in the two-mile area around Flora for zoning purposes. Flora will revert to the original ordinance and will have jurisdiction over only the area inside the town boundaries.

75 YEARS AGO

H. Dale Brown, director of the Indiana Motor Vehicle Bureau, warned Indiana motorists that they are subject to arrest for failure to display license plates in the front and back for their cars. Brown made the announcement when he received reports that several thousand lost plates have been recovered by license branch managers.

The following was taken from the Delphi Citizen: “Forty years ago this month, Carroll County people were wondering if the automobile was here to stay, just as today, the people of the county are wondering if the airplane is just a passing fancy or whether we had better get in gear and prepare for a world of tomorrow, in which planes will be the fashionable mode of transportation.”

100 YEARS AGO
