Delphi splits with Eastern, eases past Rossville

With four games on their schedule last week, Delphi’s varsity baseball team went three for four while knocking off Rossville in both games before losing game one to Class 2A No. 4 Eastern and then bouncing back for a game two victory.

The Oracles’ record moved to 13-5 as they currently sit at No. 10 in Class 2A as well in the Indiana High School Baseball Coaches Association poll.

In game one against the Hornets, Delphi used 14 runs and 13 hits to drub Rossville with a final of 14-4 as the sixth inning took center stage for the Oracles’ highlight reel when they put together eight runs in the inning. A line drive to left field for Tristin Isley marked one of many scoring opportunities for Delphi while Gavin Inman and Brock Burton had hits to the infield for multiple Oracle scores.

Chase and Cole Long followed up Delphi’s hit sixth inning with back-to-back fly balls to the outfield in the seventh to put Rossville away for good and ten-run ruling the Hornets in the process.

Chase Long finished with a team high three hits and three runs batted in (RBI) while Cole Long fanned 10 batters from the pitcher’s mound.

Game two against the Hornets remained close until Brock Burton’s key hit in the bottom of the seventh gave Delphi the deciding run in a 7-6 win over Rossville at home. Luke Smock finished with two hits and four RBIs.

With a little less than two weeks remaining in the regular season, Delphi wants to iron out any deficiencies it may have before the postseason tournament with games next week against No. 2 in Class 3A Western on Thursday followed by a home matchup against Lebanon on Friday and another road contest at Frontier on Saturday.

Last Saturday, it was a battle of top 10 teams when Delphi hosted Eastern before giving up five runs in the first inning to the Comets in game one and ultimately losing the conference matchup, 6-3.

Cole Long led the team with one hit and one RBI in the loss before the Oracles bounced back in game two, 15-8.

Seven runs in the opening two innings were the offensive catalyst for an Oracle team that had trouble getting its bats going in game one.

In game two, it was less of a problem as Delphi used 14 hits throughout the game and a ground out to second base from Gavin Inman to put the Oracles on the board in the opening inning. Delphi kept its foot on the gas in the ensuing inning with line drives to center and left field from Luke Smock and Tristin Isley as the Oracles took a two-run lead going into the third. Five runs in the sixth inning put the Oracles over the edge for good as they cruised past the Comets, 15-8, and clinched their 13th victory of the season.

Chase Long led the team with three hits and two RBIs while Isley notched two hits and one run batted in as well.
