With a history of continual success in the postseason, Delphi’s varsity baseball team is primed for another deep tournament run this season with a group of veterans who played key roles in their sectional run last year while aiding the Oracles to a 21-9 record.
The Oracles won their third sectional in a row last season behind a 9-7 victory over Seeger in the championship bout before falling to county rival Carroll, 5-4, in the regional semifinals.
In 2023, Delphi will roll out a squad led by five seniors and six juniors.
From an offensive perspective, Delphi returns plenty of runs scored from a year ago as Chase Long comes back for his senior campaign as the team’s leader in batting average with .507 from ’22 while tallying 35 hits and 46 runs batted in (RBI).
Brock Burton, Jaxson Hixson, Cole Long and Chase Almager all return this season, averaging over .300 in the batter’s box from a season ago as well.
Delphi finished in third place in the Hoosier Heartland Conference in 2022 and will kick off HHC play on April 20 at home against Carroll.
On the mound, Delphi boasts a number of returning pitching talents beginning with Chase Almager and Carson Workinger. Almager and Workinger pitched earned run averages of 2.38 and 3.15 last season while finishing with a combined record of 7-1.
Workinger led the team with 38 strikeouts in 2022.
Dakota Titus and Keigan Watts also return after each appearing in four games or more.
The Oracles begin their season at home with a nonconference showdown against the West Lafayette Red Devils on April 7 before traveling to Madison-Grant the following day for a double header.
