County council holds special meeting to consider hiring requests

The Carroll County Council recently adopted an ordinance which allows the governing body to approve all county government full-time hires for vacant positions. Council members vowed at the time of the adoption that they would hold special meetings for department heads to make requests if necessary.

Carroll Manor Superintendent Martha Lewis and county highway engineer Paul Couts were the first department heads to request a special meeting, held April 12. Lewis said that an aide on the third shift will leave the post on April 21. She said the position requires training but the $9.45/hour position does not require certification to perform the job duties.

“This is one of the most important positions we have,” Lewis said.

Lewis was granted permission to replace the outgoing worker. She was instructed to follow all Federal and State hiring regulations and post the job for two weeks. She was directed to utilize part-time workers in the position until the new person begins.

Couts will hire a full-time truck driver to fill a position vacated by an extended probationary worker who was unable to fulfill the job requirements. The position pays $13.73 to $14.40 per hour. Couts said the county employs 19 full-time drivers in addition to part-time seasonal help.

The council will meet in regular session April 21 at 8:30 a.m. The public is encouraged to attend.
