Carroll FFA members Travis Martin, Sarah Griffin, Malena Zook, and Chandler Keown attended the Washington Leadership Conference (WLC) in Washington, D.C. in July.
The week-long program helped FFA members improve their leadership skills and prepare for leadership roles in their chapters, communities, and future careers. They attended workshop sessions on persuasive communication, character leadership and relationship building, and participated in discussions on citizenship.
Students also learned about giving back to their community, through volunteering. One of the highlights of the week for the Carroll chapter was the day of service. The 200 members and advisors attending the conference were shuttled to Maryland to pick corn for the food shelters in the Maryland and D.C. area. In 40 minutes the grouped picked over 21,000 pounds of corn. This was enough to feed over 40,000 people.
The FFA members also increased their understanding of the nation’s heritage with visits to Mount Vernon, Arlington National Cemetery, the Jefferson, Lincoln and Roosevelt Memorials, the World War II Memorial, and other historic sights in Washington. They also had the opportunity to visit the office of their local Congressman/ Senator.
More than 2,000 FFA members attended one of the conference’s seven week-long sessions.
The National FFA Organization coordinates the WLC in cooperation with the U.S. Department of Education. The WLC attracts participants from across the country.
