Meandering Melodies

Brrrrrrrrrrr!!! Ready or not winter has returned! I’m thinking a person could get rather spoiled with 50-degree weather in Indiana at this time of year! My Aunt Martha used to say, “We take whatever comes.” How true that is. Sometimes we take whatever comes with quiet resignation and acquiescence. Sometimes we take whatever comes without complaining. Sometimes we take whatever comes kicking and screaming the whole way. Maybe not so you can actually see the kicking and screaming but nevertheless that’s what’s happening inside! If Aunt Martha ever kicked and screamed, no one knew it but Aunt Martha! She was one of the gentlest souls I ever knew.

By the time you read this article the year 2019 will be history. As I think about the past year it is incredible how many lifechanging events took place that affected my life in all sorts of ways; some known; some unknown. Many of the things that happened I would not have chosen.

I would not have chosen for our grandson to be so sick with meningitis. I would not have chosen for Philip to have hernia surgery. I would not have chosen to deal with some health issues of my own. I would not have chosen cancer to strike in our family and take Philip’s brother, Lyle. I would not have chosen for my dad to have a heart attack! But these things all happened and “we take whatever comes!”

The outcome for all those things that come could have been very different. God’s mercy and grace and healing were experienced over and over even though the healing didn’t always look the way we might have expected. As we thought about what might lie ahead in the New Year last year we did not think about all these things coming! But come they did!

My vision for the 2020 New Year is one of tranquility! My vision for 2020 is for normal, everyday life where the days blend easily into one! My vision for 2020 includes rest for my soul and time spent with the Lord to gain strength for “whatever comes!”

In my mind right now I’m wondering how this can happen knowing what we have planned for the year 2020! We plan to move forward with adding on to our house in the spring. Mark plans to move to Virginia at the beginning of summer. Rochelle will be finished with her third year at Charis Bible College. Naaman and Helen have their building project to finish. Carl has projects he wants to work on. And the list goes on! Somehow, some way, there will be some rest for the weary!

How about you? What is your vision for 2020? Do you have a to-do list that is waiting for you? Have you made New Year’s resolutions that are high and lofty and attainable? Have you allowed yourself to dream just a little about what the New Year can hold for you?

It’s interesting to note that perfect vision for our natural eyes is 20/20. Perfect 20/20 vision means we can see everything clearly and have no need of a different lens to correct our vision.

It has been said that hindsight is 20/20. Perhaps it could be said that foresight is 20/20, too. It is the present moment where we find things quite different than the preconceived notions we had of how things should or could be or we wish they might have been!

Beware of rose-colored glasses that distort the truth. Rose-colored glasses tend to gloss over what is real. Rose-colored glasses can be the lies we choose to tell ourselves because the truth may be too painful to embrace or speak. Rose-colored glasses can be part of a fantasy world we live in because giving a voice to the truth that is inside us breaks the barrier walls we’ve built around parts of our heart that protect us from more hurt and pain.

Wearing rose-colored glasses or choosing to look at life through rose-colored glasses can be a good thing sometimes because it delays having to face the truth and gives us a bit more time to process what is happening in our lives. We can envision the world we want to live in, the dreams that are within our reach and a place where there is only peace and love for our brother – a place where we have perfect vision although it is rose-colored! I must say that life has a way of stripping off the rose-colored glasses we think we want to wear!

It has been said an optimist looks at a glass filled partially with water and says it is half full. The pessimist says it is half empty. I say it’s an invitation to fill up the glass!

None of us knows exactly what the year 2020 will hold. However, we do know the Lord holds each day in His hands. Perhaps He will return this year and we’ll see Him coming in the clouds with power and great glory! What a glorious day that will be!

Dear Lord, as we think and ponder about the vision we have of 2020 we’re standing on the promises of God and with thankful hearts we claim and accept each one of them! Thank you for Your perfect provision for our souls. You gave us Jesus! We just celebrated His birth. Thank You for His life, His teaching, and for His obedience to you, O Father! Thank You for His death on that old rugged cross. He was the first sacrifice with a soul. When You saw His soul as an offering for our sin, You were satisfied. Thank You for the Holy Spirit who lives inside all those who have declared that You are Lord of their lives; those who walk and talk with You on a regular basis. Those who desire to be led by You. Those who love and serve You.

As we walk with You into this New Year may we declare Your kingdom. May Your Light shine through us in this dark, sin cursed world drawing all men to You. Let no enemy plan, scheme, or obstacle keep us from serving You, Lord, and living out Your will for our lives. Continue to reveal Truth to us through Your Word that helps us see the invisible, accomplish the impossible, and love the unlovable! Walking with You gives us 20/20 vision for 2020! Thank You, Father! In Jesus Name, Amen

Have a Happy and Blessed New Year! May His peace rest within you, His love flow out of you, and His joy put a song in your heart!
