Thomas A. Payne

Tom Payne, 82, of Delphi, passed away at St. Elizabeth Healthcare, Delphi, on Nov. 2, 2018.

He was born May 12, 1936, in Indianapolis to Lawrence A. and Edna (Reinking) Payne. He was a 1954 graduate of George Washington High School and had attended DePauw University. He graduated from Butler University in 1958. On June 15, 1957, he married Pollie Anne Kidwell and she survives.

He taught government, economics and U.S. history for 40 years in the Indianapolis Public Schools. He served as department chair of social studies at Shortridge and Broad Ripple high Schools. He also worked security at the Indianapolis 500.

Tom was an avid Colts fan and an avid traveler, who loved the Great Smoky Mountains and national parks. He enjoyed hiking, camping, boating and fishing at the lake cottage.

He was a member of the Oasis Choir, ISTA, and NEA.

Along with his wife, Pollie, he is survived by his daughter, Linda Tyner (Jim) of Delphi; grandchildren, Nick Tyner (Laura) and Brittany Tyner; and great-grandchildren, Ashton and Abby Tyner.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Joanne Huff, and a granddaughter, Julianne Rachel Tyner.

Service was held Tuesday at Davidson Funeral Home, Delphi, with Pastor Bob Duke officiating. Burial followed at Masonic Cemetery, Delphi.
