10 YEARS AGO

County leaders were urged to proceed with the sale of countyowned land to the north and west of Carroll Manor to Indiana Packers Corporation in a letter to Carroll County Commissioners by the Carroll County Agriculture Association Board of Directors. The ag association encouraged them to put their differences with the council aside to “do what was best for the county.”

Windows in downtown Delphi have been decorated for Old Settlers with each window representing the history and heritage of one or more townships in Carroll County.

Delphi Preservation Society is sponsoring two entertaining programs, renowned Indiana photographer John Bower and local singer/songwriter Eric Hicks, plus Opera House tours and historic Delphi trolley tours during Old Settlers this week.

Adam VanMatre received his gold wings upon graduation from the U.S. Navy in San Diego, Calif., as a sea/air rescue swimmer.

25 YEARS AGO

The addition to the Burlington Community Building was dedicated and the new structure includes an expanded meeting room, kitchen, library and museum for a total cost of $155,000. Community support provided $108,000 with a balance of $42,250 to be paid.

David Smith, Delphi Community School Corporation superintendent, has resigned after six years with the corporation. He has accepted a position at Lake Park (Ill.) High School as superintendent.

The Delphi and Flora Chapters of Psi Iota Xi Sorority are planning a county-wide adult spelling bee. Businesses, factories, clubs, organizations, churches and groups of friends are encouraged to organize teams of three or four to enter Carroll County’s First Adult Spelling “Bee for Literacy.” Proceeds will benefit “Carroll County Cares About Literacy.”

50 YEARS AGO

Carroll County Commissioners Carl Dittman, Lee Flora and Ren Groninger have approved the purchase of a used truck with a cage to be used by the sheriff’s department to pick up stray dogs. The total cost is $1,000. The truck will also be used to haul boats when needed for drownings.

Mr. and Mrs. Chester Sterrett of Battle Ground held an old-fashioned threshing. There was threshing with a steam engine, sawing logs and grinding corn meal. Ham and beans and cornbread made from the corn meal was served during the event.

75 YEARS AGO

Holders of “A” ration books can use their gasoline coupons for traveling to and from their summer homes or other vacation places under certain conditions. Motorists have to file an application with the local war price and rationing board for authorization to make the trip, setting out the time, starting point and destination.

100 YEARS AGO

News out of Washington - A tax on gasoline and an excise tax on the use of automobiles were adopted by the Ways and Means Committee for the $8,000,000,000 revenue bill. The gasoline tax will be 2¢ a gallon, to be paid by the producer or manufacturer.
