Delphi woman marks 100th birthday

Grace Delaney Grace Delaney Grace Hibner Delaney of Delphi was 100 years old on July 20 and a celebration was held in her honor on that day at St. Elizabeth Healthcare Center in Delphi.

She was born July 20, 1918, in White County, the daughter of John and Cora Hibner of Monticello. She graduated from Monticello, High School in 1936 and celebrated that date again at her 75th class reunion in 2011.

In 1940 she married her husband of 57 years, Robert J. Delaney of Delphi. He died in 1998.

Grace could be called a “domestic engineer” for the loving and energetic way she cared for her family, home and her community. She tackled and excelled at many domestic tasks such as cooking, baking, canning, knitting and cleaning. She read to her children and taught them how to read and to sing and enjoy music.

Grace could instigate competition through a friendly game of cards and board games. She could even challenge others to pitch a horseshoe or two.

The community benefited many years through her involvement with Meals on Wheels, the Food Pantry, babysitting, serving on the election board, Weight Watchers, and being involved in her church in the Rosary Society and organizing luncheons and various dinners.

For years she traveled to visit and celebrate her family all over the United States. Recently many family members returned that effort by honoring Grace by flying and driving from all over to be with her and celebrate her 100th birthday.

Grace has five children - Kathleen, James, Robert, Joann and Jean (deceased). Her family also includes 16 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild.

Cards and well wishes may be sent to her at St. Elizabeth Healthcare Center, 701 Armory Road, Delphi, IN 46923.
