Lady Cougars hold off Oracles for win

After falling at Tri Central last Thursday night, Carroll (6-12) bounded back at home Friday night to defeat Delphi( 10-5) 42-37.

The Lady Cougars never trailed in the game as 5 points by senior Megan Herr gave Carroll a 6-4 lead after one quarter. The Lady Cougars built their biggest lead of 8 points, 16-8, on a pair of free throws by Kelsey Hammond, and at half-time led 18-13.

Both teams fought back and forth in the third. A Katherine Lang fielder pulled the Lady Oracles to within one point at 25-24 with 1:53 left in the quarter. The Cougars scored the final 4 points to go up 29- 24.

In the final stanza, free throws by freshman Megan Wagner gave Carroll a 33-27 lead but back-to-back treys by Delphi senior Jordyn Gasser tied the game at 33. Herr came right back with a trey to put Carroll up for good. The Lady Cougars used the foul line to hold off the Oracles for the win as they connected on 6 of 9 from the foul line in the final minutes of the game.

Carroll had three players in double figures with Herr leading all scorers with a game high 13 points as well as 14 rebounds for a double-double. Wagner added 11 points, 8 boards and was 8 of 8 from the foul line. Hammond contributed 10 points and 7 boards.

For Delphi, Gasser led her team with 8 points. Lang, Lillie Smith and Haley Nelson had 7 points each.
