Jerry L. Barnes

Jerry L. “Barney” Barnes, 75, Burlington, passed away at his home on Tuesday, Jan. 9, 2018, at 10:45 a.m.

He was born Dec. 30, 1942, in Carroll County, Ind., the son of the late Elmer L. and Lola Vivian (Barnes) Barnes.  He was a 1961 graduate of Burlington High School.

Jerry had worked for Harvey & Son Construction  and Tenbrook Sales.

He was a member of Faith Church of Christ.  He also served with the Burlington Volunteer Fire Department, coached Little League and softball, and umpired.

Jerry enjoyed carpentry work, collecting antique tractors, hunting, and fishing.

We would like for him to be remembered like this.....

He was a wonderful, funny, loving and humble man, who loved his family above all else. He was proud of his kids, grandkids and great-grandkids and he loved us with all his heart and we knew it.

He taught us to be strong, to stand up for ourselves, to be competitive, yet how to lose with dignity and grace. He taught us how to work hard for the things we wanted and that HE would work hard for the things WE needed; to be honest and have integrity in all things.

Surviving are his children, Tammy Jo Barnes McCain (Scott) of Camden, Gregory Dean Barnes (Michelle)  of Flora, Douglas Marshall Barnes (Amanda) of Oregon, and Glen David Rodgers (Jessica) of Westfield; grandchildren, Evan McCain, Mason McCain, Josh Barnes, Kinsey Barnes, Blake Barnes, Brooke (Barnes) Cruickshank, Brant Barnes, Nolan, Hayden, Carter, Avery, Corinne and Joselyn Rodgers; great-grandchildren, Sophia McCain, Raquel and Bodhi Barnes; sisters, Patricia DeVore of Logansport and Wilma Jean Zell of Peru. He was married to Janet (Bennington) Gilman, who survives; and later married Linda Barnes Brookshire, who also survives.

He was also preceded in death by his brothers, Robert L. Barnes and Donald W. Barnes, and his granddaughter, Paige Barnes.

Funeral service will be held at 4 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 13, at Stout & Son Funeral Home, Neptune Chapel, 44 Michigan Street, Burlington, with Steve Cole officiating. Private family burial will take place at a later date. Friends are invited to visit with the family from 1-4 p.m. on Saturday at the funeral home.
