Sheriff warns of scam

Comet staff report

Carroll County Sheriff Tobe Leazenby reports his department has received information about a new scam that may be occurring in the county.

According to the Sheriff, scammers have been calling people in the community, advising the unsuspecting residents, they are with the Medicaid Program. The callers ask for information from those answering the telephone about their Medicaid identification or information from their cards. If the information is given, the person is then transferred to another “operator” who offers additional “Medicaid” coverage, which includes payment from the person they have called, usually in the form of a credit card.

The Sheriff’s Department advises the community to be wary of these calls and the simplest action to take, if a call is received, is to disconnect the call. Most programs such as these follow up or do business by mail and not over the phone.

“If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is!” Leazenby said.
