Charles B. Shafer

Charles B. Shafer, 84, of Flora, died at 12:20 p.m. Saturday, Nov 16, 2013, at IU Health Arnett Hospital, Lafayette, following a brief illness.

Born Oct. 20, 1929, in Cutler, he was the son of the late Hal and Anna Maurine Flora Shafer. He graduated from Flora High School in 1947. His marriage was on Jan. 15, 1956, in Flora, to Norma B. Dunkin, and she survives.

Charles was a U.S. Navy veteran, serving aboard the USS LST 279 from November 1950 to August 1954.

He retired from the former Eller Fertilizer Co. near Flora where he worked for over 30 years.

He was a member of the Flora Presbyterian Church, and a former member of the Flora Volunteer Fire Dept.

He and his wife enjoyed going to Purdue Women’s Basketball games, and they square danced for over 25 years. He enjoyed the company of his beloved dog, Lady.

Surviving with his wife are three daughters, DeEtta (Sam) Balser of North Manchester, Danita (Peter) Such of Lafayette, and Diana (Tim) Redding of Flora; a son, Chuck M. Shafer of Flora; six grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Private family services were held, with burial at Maple Lawn Cemetery, Flora.
