Joe and Mary Jo Redmon Joe and Mary Jo Redmon Joe and Mary Jo Redmon have been selected as Flora Christmas Parade grand marshals. The parade will be Saturday, starting at 12:30 p.m. at Tri Green Tractor.

The Redmons are active members of Flora Lions Club and have adopted the club motto, “We Serve,” as their own.

“Anything the Lions do, we are involved with,” Mary Jo said.

They both help with the Lions ice cream stand, the Hog Jog, the Moonlight Madness food stand, and tearing down after the Red Cross bloodmobile visits.

Joe and fellow Lions member Tom Kressley started the Lions Ride for Riley at least 14 years ago. The event is an annual motorcycle ride that raises funds for Riley Children’s Hospital.

Joe is a past president of the Lions Club and has served as its treasurer since January 1996. He also received the Lions’ Melvin Jones Award in 2012 for humanitarian service.

Both Joe and Mary Jo are in occupations that serve people.

Mary Jo has been director of the Flora Senior Center since May 1998. She is also site director for Midland Meals.

“We have wonderful community support. I couldn’t do it without the volunteers,” she said. “And the Town backs the Center.”

Mary Jo loves interacting with those who come into the Center for meals, programs, and activities.

She says that’s the best part of her job.

“I love the people,” she said. “They just make your day. They have so many stories to tell.”

Joe is a financial counselor for Purdue Federal Credit Union.

Because of his experience in the banking and financial industry, Joe has served as treasurer for a number of organizations. Besides being Lions treasurer for almost 18 years, he was treasurer of the Red Cross when Carroll County had its own chapter; was financial clerk (and served on the board of directors) for the Bachelor Run Conservancy District; was treasurer of Flora Community Club; and was treasurer of his church.

Joe is also a past president of the Community Club, and he and Mary Jo still help with the Community Club fish fry.

The Redmons are members of the Lower Deer Creek Church of the Brethren. Both are deacons. Mary Jo serves on the Witness Committee and is active in the Women’s Fellowship. Joe is on the Steward Committee and has been chairman of the church board the last 12 years.

The Redmons have been married 44 years and have lived almost all their married life in Flora. They both grew up in Carroll County. They have two sons, Paul, of Flora, and Joel, of Camden, and four grandchildren.

The Redmons said they have been to almost all of Flora’s Christmas parades, either as spectators or participants. Joe can usually been seen walking alongside the Lions’ entry, handing out candy. Mary Jo usually rides in the Flora Senior Center entry, the Garden Spot Express.

They said this year it’s an honor to serve as grand marshals.
