Carolyn M. Young

 


   Carolyn Madge (Freeland) Young, 77, of Kokomo, died at 2:20 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 2, 2012, at Century Villa Health Care in Greentown.
    She was born Jan. 9, 1935, in Kokomo, to Owen H. and Jesse Josephine (Swaim) Freeland. She is a 1953 graduate Northwestern High School and served as senior class secretary. She graduated from Indiana University Kokomo in 1974 with a teaching degree.
    Carolyn married William Budd Young on Feb. 28, 1955. They were lifelong residents of Ervin Township and raised their four children on their farm in the corner of Howard County. He passed away on Feb. 7, 2005.
    Carolyn worked at Shell Oil Company from 1953 until 1956 and was a housewife prior to graduating from IUK. She taught third grade at Flora Elementary, later Carroll Elementary, from 1975 until 1991.
    She was a longtime member of Judson Baptist Church which she joined when she was 10 years old. She served as Sunday School teacher, choir member, church secretary, youth leader and was one of the first female deacons in the church. She later joined Faith Church of Christ in Burlington where she played the organ and attended the Wednesday evening Bible Study group.
    Carolyn was a loving daughter, wife, mother, grandmother, and sister.
    She is survived by her four children, LuAnn Edwards (husband: Steve) of Milton, Fla., Larry Young (wife: Teresa) of Kokomo, Laurie Bowen (husband: Craig) of Columbia, S.C., and Leslie Eikenberry (husband: Mike) of Bringhurst; five grandchildren, Leigh F. Young of Atlanta, Ga., Reid Young (wife: Camille) of Tucson, Ariz., Jay Young of Florence, Ky., Kayla Eikenberry of Bringhurst, and Kevin Eikenberry of West Lafayette; a brother, the Rev. Kenn Freeland (wife: Aloha) of Kokomo; and Sue Freeland of Arcadia, Fla.
    She was also preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Richard Freeland.
    Services will be held at 1 p.m. Monday at Judson Baptist Church, 1995 N. CR 750 West, Kokomo, with Rev. Dr. Henry Hawkins and Rev. Gary Britton officiating. Burial will follow at Shiloh Cemetery. Friends may call on Sunday from 2 to 6 p.m. at the church and one hour before the service on Monday.
    The family suggests memorial contributions be made to the Alzheimer’s Association or to the donor’s choice.
