Pasture Walk set for June 23
Carroll and Cass County Purdue Extension and Soil and Water Conservation Districts will hold a Pasture Walk on June 23 from 9 to 11 a.m. at Dave and Helen Forgey’s Riverview Dairy Farm, Logansport.
According to the Indiana Agricultural Statistics compiled and published by the USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics service in 2010, Cass and Carroll County had a combined total of over 15,000 beef and dairy cows. Cass County also ranks in the top third of Indiana counties for alfalfa hay production.
Earlier this year the two counties hosted the annual North Central Cow-Calf Workshop with good attendance and expect to see many of the same producers benefit from this Pasture Walk. This workshop will also be valuable to local sheep and goat producers and horse owners.
The workshop will give livestock and forage producers the opportunity to talk with experts about various forage management issues. Susannah Hinds from NRCS and Keith Johnson, Purdue Extension forage specialist, will lead the walk. Participants are encouraged to bring any forage, pasture or weed questions they have.
The Pasture Walk is free, and water and donuts will be provided. All pre-registered participants will receive a grazing stick and Forage Field Guide courtesy of the SWCD.
Riverview Dairy Farm is located at 6032 W. Georgetown Road, Logansport. Register by calling Purdue Extension Carroll County at (765) 564-3169 or Cass County at (574) 753- 7750.
