A bomb threat to Brethren Healthcare Center forced the temporary in-house relocation of residents and closed a portion of SR18 on Monday. A female caller called the nursing home and advised that a bomb was in the building and would go off at 7 p.m. Employees, officers and the bomb squad searched the property and found no bombs. Mr. Beckner indicated the possibility of a disgruntled employee making the call. Mr. Beckner said there was a computer glitch and employees weren’t paid Monday.
Carroll School Corporation teachers who retired at the conclusion of the 2000-01 school year are Kay Pullen, eighth grade English; Charlene Davis, elementary physical education; Jeanne Thornburg, elementary music; David Felty, third grade; and Dan Reedy, seventh grade science. 25 YEARS AGO
When 32 cars of the Veteran Motor Car Club, Brass & Gas Chapter, visited Flora Friday noon, not one of the vehicles was made after 1913. The oldest was a 1907 Model N Ford. Bill Flora, club director from Elkhart, said the club makes tours in the Midwest twice a year. Flora is the great grandson of John Flora, Sr., founding father of Flora. Seventy people in the club group enjoyed lunch at JoAnn’s Restaurant. The vehicles traveled the Crooked Road to Delphi when they left Flora.
The 9th annual Carroll Pork Festival will be June 20 and 21 at the Flora Park. Featured events will be the Big Wheel Race, ballgames, Little Miss Contest, Pork Queen Contest, the Hog Jog, an Antique Tractor show, the Pork Cook-off, Rolling Pin Toss, Water Ball Contest, a tennis tournament and many pork exhibits, craft & hobby exhibits and plenty of food available. 50 YEARS AGO
Almost 200 pupils and teachers assembled Monday morning at four local churches to get the 1961 Flora-Bringhurst Vacation Bible School underway.
Mrs. Lawrence Douglas, school director, has organized the program excellently although she had short notice. Enrollment continues to rise early this week and it is expected 200 pupils and 50 teachers will be participating.
The Nursery Department is at the Christian Church; Kindergarten at the Church of the Brethren; Primary at the Methodist Church and the Juniors at the Presbyterian Church.
Barney Primmer, chairman of the Flora Town Board, informs us that a red flasher similar to the one at the corner of SR 18 and Center street will be installed at the corner of main and Center streets in the near future.
When installation is completed the street crossing will be a four-way stop with preference coming on the first-come, first-served basis as the SR 18 intersection.
The Board had been considering the flasher and recently decided that traffic warranted the decision.
Wayne Beckner, Flora’s all-time leading scorer for one season and one game, has signed a tender to attend Purdue University.
The 6-4 ½ netter, will receive a four-year basketball scholarship to the Boilermaker school, which awards six such grants each year.
Beckner was a member of the Badger varsity the past two seasons and scored 856 points with 514 the last season. 75 YEARS AGO
Jason Been well known Delphi attorney and Watson McCormick, recent graduate of the Indian University law school have announced that they have formed a partnership in law. They have opened up I the A.T. Bowen building.
The new Clawson service station in West Delphi is now nearing completion.
The Board of Directors of the Carroll County Rural Electric Membership Corporation will meet to make plans to complete the membership campaign so the maps cam be sent to Washington for approval. The maps will show the location of the proposed lines in the county. The lines total 278 miles and serve 800 applicants.

An appreciative audience turned out to hear the Winona Lady Singers at the Opera House Tuesday night. Two members are residents of Flora, Maude Cree, now temporarily of Chicago and Esther Canter.
During the past school year, 150 students were enrolled in the Delphi H.S. Out of that number here were 34 students in the Senior class, 26 in the Junior class, 45 in the Sophomore class and 44 in the Freshman class, and one special student.
A huge snapping turtle having carved on its back the initials “C.P.” and “F.B.” and the date ’07, was captured at the Deer Creek dam near Delphi last Saturday by George Weber. The meat of the turtle weighed ten pounds. Judging from its size it is thought that the turtle is about 30 years old.
