Oct. 4 - voter registration deadline
September is National Voter Registration Awareness Month. It is a time dedicated to driving home the message that every voter and every vote counts.
With the voter registration deadline for the November General Election less than a month away, Oct. 4, several registration options are available to those individuals who want to register to vote.
Individuals can visit any Bureau of Motor Vehicles branch when they complete a driver’s license or state identification card transaction, mailing in a traditional paper form, or by visiting the county clerk’s office, located in the county courthouse.
The newest option (available since July 1) is online. Those who have not registered to vote may download a registration form online at www.indianavoters. com.
A person can register to vote at the website, find out who is on their ballot, locate their polling place, and view campaign finance records of specific candidates.
Since Indiana’s online registration tool became available on July 1, over 4,500 individuals have either registered to vote or updated their information.
According to Secretary of State Todd Rokita’s office, U.S. Census figures indicate that 60 million eligible voters did not register to vote in 2008. Of the non-voters that year, 14 percent said they did not vote because they missed their state’s voter registration deadline.
