Gladys Ione Joyce
Gladys Ione Joyce was born Oct. 20, 1915, and passed to eternity, Sept. 4, 2010.
Gladys was born in Hickory Corners, Wisconsin, to Rose Zanger, and was raised by her loving grandparents, Maurice and Adelia May Phillips. She moved to Indiana at fifteen years of age and worked in the Arthur Appleton grocery store in Deer Creek. She married Virgil E. Joyce in 1934 and had three daughters, Jalene, Janet, and Joetta. Virgil preceded her in death in 1984.
Gladys was active in the Carroll County Extension Homemakers, the Indiana Flying Farmers, and the International Flying Farmers Association. She received two International Flying Farmer Certificates of Merit for successfully landing an airplane as a co-pilot in 1966 and in 1976. She also received an Airplane Owners and Pilot Association (AOPA) Achievement Award for taking over the controls of an aircraft in flight, navigating to an airport and landing the aircraft unassisted. Gladys also received the Indiana Flying Farmer Mother of the Year Award.
Gladys taught Sunday School at the Deer Creek Presbyterian Church in her early years and later in life she received a Certificate of Appreciation from the International Fellowship of Christians and Jews for helping to bring Jewish remnants home to Israel.
She was a member of the Burlington Church of Christ and received adult baptism there.
After her marriage, Gladys lived on the farm in Deer Creek, Indiana, for 72 years, before moving to Boulder, Colorado, where she resided the last five years of her life with her daughter, Janet, and family.
As a resident of Boulder, Gladys attended Cornerstone Church and participated in community and musical events with her daughter in the Boulder area.
Gladys is survived by her daughters, Jalene; Janet (Bob Davies), and Joetta (Curtis Schwaninger); her sister, Helen Peterson of Green Bay, Wisconsin; grandchildren, Traci (Bruce Evans), Torm Howse, Darin Schwaninger, Brian (Rita Schwaninger), Jeffrey Mansfield, Jon Mansfield, Michelle Hoverson and Diane Panton; great-grandchildren, Jordan and Ciara Evans, Jacob, Kimmie, Shannon and Ryan Howse, Alex, Tanner, Preston and Hunter Schwaninger, and Jessica Benish; great-greatgrandchildren, Taelynn and Braedon Benish; and numerous nieces and nephews.
A brother, Raymond, died of pneumonia as a child.
Visitation will be from 12 noon to 2 p.m. Friday at Cree Funeral Home in Camden with services following at 2 p.m. with Pastor Gene Binder of Boulder officiating. Burial will be in Deer Creek Cemetery.
