Crash in Carroll County results in death

Comet staff report

Carroll County and Indiana State Police authorities are continuing to investigate a fatal accident that occurred Sept. 2 at 7:46 p.m. which resulted in the death of a passenger.

Carroll County 911 received a report of a single vehicle crash on CR 1200N east of the intersection of CR 400W in northeastern Carroll County. A preliminary investigation indicated that Stephen Eric Jones, 23 of rural Idaville, was driving a 1992 Saturn passenger car eastbound on CR 1200N. Corey Michael Isom, 23, of rural Burnettsville, was the passenger in the Jones vehicle.

For reasons unknown, Jones reportedly veered off the right side of the roadway and entered a small ditch. According to the police report he appeared to have overcorrected, coming back on to the roadway, then went left-ofcenter. The vehicle struck a tree on the left side of the road and flipped around sideways, causing Isom’s side of the vehicle to broadside another tree. The car then flipped sideways an additional turn on the east side of the tree, coming to rest there.

Fire personnel from Burnettsville, Idaville, Delphi and Monticello departments worked to extricate Jones. He was flown from the scene with critical injuries by Samaritan Medical Helicopter to Parkview Main Hospital in Fort Wayne.

Isom was pronounced dead at the scene by Carroll County Coroner, J.D. Cree.

Indiana State Police F.A.T.S. investigator Steve Buckley of the Lafayette district, responded for an onscene reconstruction of the accident. Police continue to investigate to determine if drugs or alcohol were a factor.

Jones remains hospitalized at Parkview in Fort Wayne.
