Delphi retained the prized skillet with a 35-6 thrashing of Carroll. Photo provided The Oracles used some home cooking and a variety of weapons to win the 2010 Bacon Bowl against rival Carroll. The final score at Berto Field was 35-6.

Against Central Catholic last week, the Oracles relied heavily on the athletic talent of Karson Bender to get them through. Coach Sailors realized that he needed to get more people involved in the offense. The Oracles opened the game with a 73-yard touchdown drive on the first possession of the game.

While Bender did account for 47 of those yards, three other players touched the ball including Tanner Lynde, who scored on a five-yard run. Matt Brown scooped up a bad snap on the extra point and ran around the right side for a two-point conversion to put the Cougars in an early 8-0 hole.

Brown, who finished 22 of 29 for 264 yards, was 5 for 9 for 62 yards.

Carroll took its turn on offense and advanced the ball past midfield to the Oracle 40-yard line before being stopped. Delphi used seven plays to march 73 yards and another touchdown with a Brown to Lynde screen pass getting 39 of those yards. A TD saving tackle by Chad Griffin prevented Lynde from taking the ball all the way. Lynde scored later on a oneyard plunge. Megan Grace kicked the extra point for a 15-0 score to end the first period.

After forcing a punt the Oracles moved the ball 53 yards for another score; the final 21 yards on a run by Brown. The extra point by Grace was wide right.

With the score 21-0 and in danger of becoming a rout it was time for the Cougars to step up. And that is what they did. They took six minutes off the clock and took the ball 69 yards for a TD. Chad Griffin rushed for 32 yards and QB Daniel Huckstep completed 2 of 3 passes for 33 yards. The Cougars tried a trick play for two points but it was snuffed out by Brown who stopped the play before it could get anywhere.

With their offense finally clicking the Carroll defense needed to do the same. It wasn’t going to happen though. Delphi went ahead 28-6 when Brown passed 20 yards to Jacob Brummett just before halftime. Carroll was unable to stop the Oracles. They had drives of 73, 77, 53 and 66 yards for first half touchdowns.

After advancing the ball inside the Delphi 40 to open the second half, Carroll went for it on a fourth down play but didn’t make for a turnover. That was the last time Carroll threatened a score of any kind. The Delphi offense that moved the ball in the first half didn’t come back out for the second half though. While they moved the ball into Carroll territory each time they had the ball the Cougar defense stepped up and shut them down before they could score. Delphi finally scored a meaningless touchdown with 8.3 seconds left for a final score of 35-6.

While Brown was passing for 274 yards Lynde rushed for another 98 to lead the Oracle attack.

Carroll was led in rushing by Brady Noonkester with 52 yards. Chad Griffin ran for 43 to go along with his 74 passing yards.

Delphi evens its record at 1- 1 while Carroll falls to 0-2 for the season. Carroll continues on the road next week with a game at Tri-Central while Delphi entertains highly ranked West Lafayette in a conference game.
