Much to do at this year’s Old Settlers celebration

When the 155th annual Carroll County Old Settlers celebration rolls into Delphi next week there will be much to choose from in the way of entertainment, food, rides and more. This year’s event will mark the 182nd anniversary of Carroll County.

The following are just a few of the events that can be enjoyed during the annual celebration.

Red Brick Theatre

The Delphi Public Library Red Brick Theatre will present performances of “A Bad Year for Tomatoes,” a comedy by John Patrick, on Aug. 11 and 12 at 7 p.m., Aug. 13 and 14 at 8 p.m. and on the 14th at 2 p.m. at the Opera House Gallery. Featured players will be Andrew Martin, Jimmy Reed, Daniel Martin, Grace Currie, Kayla Haley, Hannah Evans and Sara Daly Brosman. Seating is limited to 50 per performance. Tickets will be available at the Opera House beginning Aug. 5.

The Delphi Preservation Society will once again have an old-fashioned keg root beer booth. Along with the root bear, DPS will also sell copies of the new book, “Delphi,” and the organization’s cookbook.

Tom Atkinson will present “History Through Postcards” in the circuit courtroom on the third floor of the courthouse at 7 p.m. on Aug. 13.

A special exhibit of Lynn Thomsen’s paintings will be on display in front of the gallery throughout August. Thomsen, a 1975 graduate of Delphi Community High School, died in 2008. The exhibit will honor her memory and artistry with a display of more than 25 of her paintings.

New work by resident artists Rena Brouwer, Terry Lacy and Alan McConnell will also be on display.

Trolley tours of the downtown will be offered at 5 and 7 p.m. on Aug. 14, departing from the Murphy Fountain on the southwest corner of the courthouse square.

Opera House tours will be available throughout Old Settlers days. Check the red doors for posted times.

Old Settlers meeting

The Old Settlers meeting and program will be Aug. 14 at 1:30 p.m. Registration begins at 1 p.m. at the Wabash & Erie Canal Interpretative Center in Delphi. There will be special music and much more. Delphi Historical Museum and Courthouse

There will be historical society demonstrations with weaving and spinning on the Carroll County Courthouse lawn and an art show in the courthouse rotunda.

Museum and Art Show hours are: Aug. 11 from 6-9 p.m.; Aug. 12, 9 a.m.–5 p.m.; Aug. 13, 9 a.m.–9 p.m. and Aug. 14, 12-9 p.m.

Wabash & Erie Canal Park

The Rendezvous will take place again in the grove next to the pioneer village in canal park from Aug. 12-14. There will be period crafts and demonstrations. Take time to go down to the canal and check out all the festivities.

Chamber of Commerce

Something new has been added to this year’s Old Settlers events – the first annual Old Settlers Got Talent contest, sponsored by the Delphi Chamber of Commerce. The event will be held on the courthouse square with semi-finals Aug. 13 and finals on Aug. 14. Trophies and cash prizes will be awarded to winners from two divisions, kids up to 12 and adults 13 and older. Registration deadline is Aug. 6. Delphi Rotary Club

The Delphi Rotary Club will sponsor a horseshoe tournament Aug. 14 at 9 a.m. at the canal center. To register and participate ,contact “pit boss” Tom Brodar at (765) 564-4952.
