Non-custodial parent arrested for kidnapping
According to the Indiana State Police, they received information from the Murray County, Georgia, Sheriff’s Department that a non-custodial parent had kidnapped his two year-old child on July 22 and may have been heading to the Carroll County area.
Troopers and Carroll County Sheriff’s deputies arrested Philip M. McDermitt, 29, of Delphi, for kidnapping and other non-related charges at a residence located at 9391W. CR550N., Delphi.
McDermitt had allegedly taken the child from the mother in Chatsworth, Ga. Troopers A.J. Smith and Tyler Stinson, along with Carroll County deputies, arrived at the location and found McDermitt on the porch. The suspect ran into the house where officers followed and took him into custody. The two year-old was found inside the house unharmed and was turned over to Carroll County Child Protective Services.
McDermitt was transported to the Carroll County Jail and initially charged with kidnapping and aggravated battery on two warrants out of Murray County.
Upon further investigation, it was discovered that there were active warrants on McDermitt from Clinton County for probation violation and two charges from the Lafayette Police Department for false informing and operating a vehicle while never receiving a license.
