Ag Day file photo, 2007 Ag Day file photo, 2007 On Thursday, March 18, for the 13th year, Carroll County will gather its fourth graders to attend the Annual Ag Day event hosted by the Soil and Water Conservation District.

This event is a showcase of Indiana Agriculture and sponsored by local agribusinesses and community volunteers.

With the first Ag Day being held in 1998, the program has been tweaked and pruned to the well-oiled event that will take place tomorrow.

The 18 sessions that students are able to visit are Dairy, Pork, Forestry, Careers, Ag Marketing, Farm Safety, Vegetables, Beef, Poultry, Farm Machinery, Popcorn, Soybeans, Corn, Small Grains, Backyard Conservation, Soils, Water and Watersheds.

The students get two breaks during the day to attend a session with live animals and an activity room with agriculture centered games and projects.

Each student will be treated to a take home-bag at day’s end with items from each booth to remind them of some of the things they learned. These items are meant to be shared at school and at home with siblings and parents for a better understanding of the agricultural community in which we live.

This program is more than just one day during Ag Week, however. It is a six-month long process of planning and organizing every small detail, including lining up session leaders for the booths, volunteers to serve lunch, and procuring donations. For this, the SWCD thanks everyone who has a big or small part in making Ag Day happen.

Donations have allowed a porkburger lunch to be served at no cost to the students, teachers, and volunteers. The Carroll County Ag Association grills the porkburgers. Some years, they’ve cooked in adverse weather conditions such as rain, cold or snow. Tomorrow we’re hoping for sunshine!
