County resident complains about lack of building code enforcement
Jefferson Township resident Dana Smith made an impassioned plea for a county building inspector at the Feb. 23 Carroll County Area Plan Commission meeting. Smith said he has been in home construction since 1993 and was prompted to make a presentation by actions of a neighbor that he believes should have been regulated.
However no decisions could be made, due in part to the lack of a quorum of members. President Bob McCain, Kirk Germond, and Nelson Smith were the only members present for the monthly meeting held on the fourth Tuesday of every month.
Smith said a county building inspector would ensure building codes are enforced. He suggested that the building inspector’s compensation could be supported by increased permit fees.
McCain agreed that the county needs a building inspector. Smith was advised to prepare a proposal. Zoning administrator Kathy Mylet will review building codes established by Flora.

Mylet distributed an updated membership list, appointment terms and bylaws for members’ review before the March meeting.
Mylet reported that the bylaws were outdated based on obsolete references to the Indiana Code. She stated she updated a portion of the bylaws after research in the current Indiana Code and revised the language accordingly. Mylet said the current bylaws dictate how many members are needed for a quorum, but do not state the minimum number of meetings members must attend.
The next meeting will be March 30 at 7 p.m.
