Four Cougar wrestlers are tourney champions
Ten members of the Carroll Wrestling Club were in action on Sunday at the Tipton Beginners Tournament. Designed as a tournament for wrestlers with two years or less experience broken down into pools of generally four or five wrestlers per age division, some wrestlers faced competitors of weights greater than the normal fivepound difference. The club ended the day with four members standing atop the awards podium as champions – Tanner Turnpaugh, Mason Sheagley, Quinton Veach, and Austin McCracken.
PeeWee wrestler Turnpaugh won all three rounds by pin, improving his record to a two-time champion. Dagan Noonkester led the club’s Bantam wrestlers, going 3 and 1 for the day to finish in second place. Chase Humphreys earned 4th place.
Two of the club’s champions came in the intermediate division. Sheagley won all his rounds by decision and remained undefeated for the day. He was joined by Veach, who finished the day with three pins with the last pin coming in the final minutes of the third period. The club’s final intermediate wrestler, Bradley McCain, finished in third place.
Schoolboy wrestler Reece Wickersham added another pin to his record and finished in second place.
Cadet wrestlers Mc- Cracken and Kelby Scott encountered some weight differences. McCracken was not deterred and went undefeated for the day with a final round pin of competitor Isaac Garmon who had a 25-lb. advantage on him. Scott, who began the day with a win by pin, finished with a 4th place finish.
The club, coached by Vearl Turnpaugh, Ladd Kitchel, Chad Willis and Cameron Profitt, will finish its season next week in Kokomo at the Northwestern Youth Wrestling Little MIC.
