Voters have some choices in May Primary
Some primary elections come and go without a lot of fanfare from voters and/or the local media. That is not to be the case in Carroll County this May. Many key races, such as commissioners, one council seat, two school board seats, the prosecutor, treasurer, and one trustee seat are being contested to determine what names will appear on their party ballot in the November general election.
However, school board elections are decided during the Primary. Voters will choose between Jon Randle, Robert Aldrich and John L. Smith to represent them on the Delphi School Board in District 1 and will choose between Gil Smith and Toby Yates for the District 2 seat on the same school board.
Voters will have two choices on the Republican ballot for Carroll County Commissioner. Political newcomer Jamie Rough from Jefferson Township is opposing current county council member Ron Slavens of Adams Township for the seat currently held by Loren Hylton.
There is a three-way race for prosecutor in the Republican party. Incumbent Tricia Thompson will be challenged by former prosecutor Rob Ives and James D. Ackermann, currently a deputy prosecutor in a neighboring county.
Council president Ann Brown is being challenged in her reelection bid by Democrat Township resident Jerry Carter. Both are Republicans.
A two-way Republican challenge for county treasurer exists between political veteran Beth Myers and Gayla Martin, the first deputy in the office currently.
Monroe Township residents will choose between Sarah Hanaway and James Hancock to be the Republican candidate for township trustee.
The Comet will feature articles to highlight contested races in the coming weeks. See page A8 for a complete list of local candidates.
