County rivals to square off in Delphi Sectional
Just like the girls, for the third consecutive year Carroll and Delphi will face each other in the boys’ basketball Sectional, to be hosted by Delphi.
The IHSAA announced its pairings from a blind draw Sunday night at Conseco Fieldhouse for the 100th Annual Boys’ Basketball State Tournament. The drawing paired the county rivals in the opening game, marking the third straight time that the two will face each other in Sectional play since the tournament re-alignment put the two teams in the same Sectional three years ago.
But unlike last season when the Cougars had to win their opening round game in order to play the Oracles, this year the two drew each other right off the bat in the Tuesday night game, slated for March 2 at 7 p.m.
Fountain Central drew Clinton Central in the Friday, March 5, 6 p.m. contest, with Seeger awaiting the Carroll- Delphi winner in the Friday 7:30 p.m. semi-final matchup.
The Sectional 37 championship game will be on Saturday, March 6, at 7:30 p.m.
With the addition of the home-and-home series to the regular season schedule, the opening game will also mark the third time this year that the two have met, with each team winning on its home court.
Delphi defeated Carroll 59- 57 on Nov. 25 in the seasonopener for both teams, with the Cougars exacting a measure of revenge with a 58-57 overtime win on Feb. 17.
Carroll, the two-time defending Sectional champion, has ended the Oracles season in tourney play in each of the past two seasons and has won five of the last six matchups and eight of the past 10 between the two dating to the 2003-04 season.
As of press time, Carroll had a 9-9 record on the season, followed by Delphi (8- 9), Fountain Central and Seeger (8-11), and Clinton Central (1-17).
The winner of the Delphi Sectional will advance to the Tipton Regional on March 13t and face the winner from the Taylor Sectional.
