Atwood pins his way to semi-state championship
Oracle senior Braden Atwood
Braden Atwood’s perfect record remained just that, perfect, after Saturday’s Wrestling Semi-State at Merrillville. The Delphi Community High School senior pinned all four of his opponents at 189 to win his second semi-state championship and a chance to compete in this weekend’s state finals in Indianapolis.
Atwood was not the only DCHS wrestler to qualify for the state finals. Sophomore Tanner Lynde took runner-up honors in the 152-pound weight class and will represent the Oracles in the next level of competition.
Atwood will enter the tournament with a 45-0 record and Lynde with a 43-2 record.
Atwood never made it to the second period in any of his four matches. He pinned all four of his opponents in less time than it takes to wrestle a full match.
He pinned his opponent from Culver in 1:14. His opponent from South Bend Riley, he pinned in 1:58. In the quarter finals he pinned his opponent from LaPorte in :59. He pinned his opponent from Merrillville in 1:28.
For the second year in a row, Lynde won semi-state runner-up honors. He earned a technical fall in the first round over his New Prairie opponent, winning 18-3. In round two he pinned his Penn opponent in 1:04. In the semi finals he won a 7-2 decision over his Kankakee Valley opponent. In the final round he lost 0-6 to a senior from Mishawaka.
Four other members of Delphi’s wrestling team competed at the semi-state.
