Atwood and Lynde are regional champions
Six members of the Oracle wrestling team have qualified to compete in this Saturday’s semistate at Merrillville. Two of the six qualifiers, Tanner Lynde and Braden Atwood, are champions in their weight classes.
Atwood is the first Oracle wrestler to win both sectional and regional titles all four years of his high school career. He pinned his Mc- Cutcheon opponent, Lorenzo Motton, in the first period of the 189-pound championship match. He won previous regional titles at the 152, 160 and 171 pound weight classes. His record remains unblemished at 41-0.
Lynde won his second regional championship in as many years at 152. Lynde, who has a 40-1 season record, pinned his McCutcheon opponent, Jared Wethington, in 1:02 in the finals in the first period. He won last year at the 140-pound weight class.
Nathan McTigue was Delphi’s lone runner-up. He lost a highly contested match to the champion, Forrest Son of Harrison, by a score of 5-4 in the 130-pound weight class. His record is now 31-6.
Placing third for the Oracles were Brandon Delaney at 171 and Roy Anderson at 215. Delaney lost in the second round and then won by a 5-2 decision in the consolation round over Christian Winkle of Twin Lakes. His record is 34-7.
Anderson wrestled well Saturday, losing only to the eventual champ in his weight. He pinned his Twin Lakes opponent, Brandon Schultheiss, in 2:29 in the finals to raise his record to 33-9.
Dayton Rumell placed fourth in the tournament, losing in the second and third round by just a point. He was right there and could not score in both matches. His record is 23-13.
Chris Brown and Ken Myers both lost in the first round.
Wrestlers had to be one of the top four finishers in each weight class to advance to the semistate.
