ISP warns motorists to be careful and use Weather Line
The Indiana State Police is warning motorists to be careful when traveling during the current snowstorm. According to a press release, during Tuesday morning and early afternoon, troopers from the Lafayette District covered several slide-offs and crashes. None of the crashes resulted in any serious injury but much property damage was done. High winds and low wind chill factors were also expected later Tuesday evening.
The first round of snow passed and another round was expected Tuesday night and into Wednesday. Motorists should be prepared for changing conditions. There may be lane restrictions and traffic back-ups. Use caution and reduce speed, particularly when approaching police who are assisting motorists and investigating crashes. Stopping and slowing distance is increased on wet, snow-covered, or icy road ways.
As Wednesday progresses into evening, additional snow accumulation is expected. Motorists should use extreme caution if travel is necessary. ISP asks motorists to NOT call county or state police dispatch centers for road conditions. Troopers and dispatchers are extremely busy with crashes and emergencies. Citizens are urged to access statewide road information by visiting Traffic- Wise.IN.gov or by calling the Road and Weather Line at (800) 261-7623.
If stranded, stay with the vehicle to stay warm, do not venture away, particularly in the rural areas. Motorists should use the following cautions when driving:
• Clear all windows, head and tail lamps of snow and ice,
• Turn headlights on even in the daylight hours,• Reduce speed,
• Be aware of sudden stops,• Keep more distance between vehicles, Do Not Tailgate,
• Hang up cell phones and drive with caution,• Buckle up – Always wear your seatbelt and require all passengers to be buckled,
• move over, slow down when approaching emergency and highway service vehicles,• Four-wheel drive does not make vehicles stop faster, they also need to slow down,
• Do not travel if you do not have to. Call ahead to be sure your event is not cancelled already, and• Tune to the local media and media websites for current conditions and weather related cancellations.
Lt. Jay Janke, District Commander of the Lafayette District, said motorists should keep in mind that conditions can change quickly during a winter storm. Expected winds may cause drifting, low visibility and black ice.Motorists should be prepared in the event of a long delay. Preparation includes plans for alternate routes, an emergency kit, a charged cell phone and any medications taken regularly.
