Lessons from the Heart

Give Him A Try
By Dr. Peter E. Roussakis

Roussakis Roussakis Well-known to Christians are the words from the collection of Proverbs in the Bible: “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will make your paths straight.” Proverbs 3:5- 6.

By simple observation we see so many aimless people trying to find their way through life. They make mistakes, often big ones, only to realize later the consequences of their actions and that they acted from a misguided point of view. The world at large does not help, although one would think if such persons watch television they would find their actions being repeated again and again and that the consequences are presented, again and again. Strange.

In addition, the world seems to say, “Here are some choices; pick one; each one is as good as the other; there is no right or wrong.” How tragic a point of view. Some of the choices truly are wrong.

God has designed life with a moral fabric and rhythm. When we go against the natural order, the consequences usually raise their creepy heads. It is sad to say the world and so many folks are on windy paths which lead to nowhere but unhappiness.

The proverbs given above are illustrative of such sayings which by simple observation of others and events reveal the “common sense” truths about life, such as: “All hard work brings a profit but mere talk leads only to poverty.” Proverbs 14:23.

It is really a matter of common sense discernment that in order for us to live on paths which leads to good and satisfying destinations, we must honor the One who created life with the rhythms which make it orderly and fruitful. If we trust in the Lord with sincerity and honesty, seek His understanding in the written words of the Bible, He will reveal His will and guide you in a direction which will enable your lives to flourish. Why not give Him a try.

Dr. Peter E. Roussakis is pastor at the First Brethren Church in Burlington.
