Joy Heber served as a senate page for Indiana State Senator Katie Wolf on Jan. 25. Heber is the daughter of Albert and Gloria Heber and is a seventh grader at Heritage Christian Academy (home schooled).

Kay Ross received the 1999 Doris Peterson Outstanding 4-H Leader award from the 1998 recipient, Teresa Fife. Ross was presented a plaque, the John Peterson Carroll County history book and a $50 savings bond at the 52nd annual 4-H Leaders’ banquet.

Aimee Beale joined the staff of Coles Media and Public Relations (CMPR) in Indianapolis as a public relations associate. She is the daughter of David and Sandy Beale of Delphi.

Dave Wright, Director of Camp Tecumseh YMCA was presented the Sagamore of the Wabash award by Senator Katie Wolf at a special gather Jan. 28. Wright has served the YMCA for over 25 years.

25 YEARS AGO

Three-time winner of Carroll High School’s best defensive football player award Dean Orem has been chosen the most valuable player in the 32- school Region 4 of the Indiana Football Coaches’ Association.

The region includes Classes AAAA, AAA, AA and A schools with Carroll a member of Class A, the smallest classification.

Carroll County experienced record low temperatures over the weekend. Sunday morning the lowest temperature was 23.5 degrees below zero, according to Joseph Peterson, official county government weather observer. The wind chill factor ranged from minus 50-80 degrees throughout the day.

Extremely cold weather is blamed for the grain bin which burst sometime between midnight and 6 a.m. at the Andersons east of Delphi. The bin contained 440,000 bushels of corn. When the steel bin broke, it destroyed receiving and shipping conveyors affecting total operation of the elevator. It is expected the elevator will be able to receive grain again by March 1. Early damage estimates have been set at $3/4 million. Because the corn is of good quality and because of the cold weather, they expect no deterioration and anticipate salvaging 95 percent of the grain.

Rae Ann Valadez was crowned basketball homecoming queen during halftime of the Carroll-West Central game. Her escort was Mike Thompson.

50 YEARS AGO

Sheriff John Roth appeared before the City Council Monday night to further promote the plan of a cooperative project to employ night operators of the radio at the county jail. It was estimated that the cost would be about $4,500, for two men to work 6 hours each, seven nights a week to receive fire and police calls.

The Chittick Ford Tractor, Inc., located at the west edge of Flora on state road 18, has been sold to Ford Power Equipment, Inc., of Flora. The new owner is operating temporarily in the present location.

Floyd Johns purchased the Josephine Mears estate property, located at 401 West Front street in Delphi from Victor Porter, administrator of the estate.

75 YEARS AGO

The following telegram was received by George Durgan at Lafayette on January 26. “The erection of a federal building at Delphi, Indiana, is under consideration. On January 17th a post office inspector was sent out to determine a suitable site. Ambrose O’Connell, executive assistant to postmaster general.”

Ed Coomey has taken over the management of the Shell Oil Station at the corner of Franklin and Washington streets. Ernest Murphy will join him in the partnership in the near future. Carlyle Kirkpatrick who has been in charge has not yet announced his future plans.

Charles Flagler of this city, has just received an autographed picture with Mr. Ripley’s picture writing a cartoon on which appear the words, “To Charles Flagler, the first to ever introduce me in vaudeville.” With best wishes of Ripley, “Believe it or not” 1935. This occasion was at the Oriental Theater in Detroit about four years ago. Mr. Flagler was master of ceremonies and Mr. Ripley was a special feature in the show.

100 YEARS AGO

For the information of its patrons Mr. McMahan, cashier of the Farmers’ State Bank at Camden, informs us that the Auditor of the state in a letter to him, states that there is no clause in the statutes making it unlawful for an person to issue checks for any amount less than $1.00. The report has been going the rounds of the press for some time that it would be unlawful after January 1, 1910 for the issuing of checks for less than $1.00, hence the above information.

Dr. E. E. Blickenstaff, who has been engaged in the practice of dentistry in this city for several years, and who was considered one of the permanent fixtures of the place, sprung a surprise last week by selling his practice and office fixtures to a Mr. Metsker of the Rossville neighborhood, who will take charge Feb. 11th. Mr. Blickenstaff will move to his father’s farm adjoining the town of Idaville, Ind., where he will raise corn and hogs and try to regain his former health.
