10 YEARS AGO
Not much is known about Edward L. Hufford, but after his death in 1989, the Carroll County resident left approximately 60 acres of land to the Indiana Department of Natural Resources (DNR). Under the care of the Division of Fish and Wildlife, this designated public land is slowly being developed as a wildlife habitat. Hufford’s gift of prairie and wooded hillsides is by CR 600N near the Tippecanoe River is a small wildlife sanctuary.
Rossville police responded quickly to a call from Bright National Bank security system early Tuesday morning. Although burglars got away, there was little damage. Suspects broke glass from the front door of the bank which set off the alarm, then targeted the cabinet housing the ATM machine.
Cory Dunbar, a seventh grader, was the winner of the Delphi Community Middle School spelling bee. He is the son of Carey and Patti Dunbar of Delphi. Runner-up was sixth grader Kristy Flora, daughter of Randi and Melissa Flora of Delphi.

Carroll Circuit Court Clerk Joan B. Nelson reports that court cases filed in 1984 are up compared to 1983.
Garald F. Manahan, 51, Delphi Community High School principal since 1969, died of an apparent heart attack.
Dr. Charles Hobbs was named acting principal.
Meeting last week, Flora Plan Commission unanimously rejected the request of Harold Klinkhamer, a Flora businessman and resident of Delphi, to rezone the Carroll Elementary School Building property in Flora to be used for business purposes.
Burlington Town Hall has recently moved to North Gate Plaza. It is located between Brewster Insurance Agency and The Broken Spoke Restaurant.
50 YEARS AGO
Burglars entered the Monon railroad station at Delphi Thursday night and took a metal cash box containing $10.48 in cash and checks worth $43.37 belonging to the Railroad Express company. No railroad money was missing.
Gilbert Underhill, who has served as Delphi City Chief of Police for the past four years, resigned Tuesday as a member of the police force. Mayor Charles A. Wood indicated that he would recommend to the Board of Public Works in their meeting Wednesday night that Patrolman Lee Thompson be named acting chief.
Supt. Wayne Eikenberry of the Delphi schools announced a new schedule for the second semester for grades 7-12 effective Monday, January 25th when lunch periods will be only 40 minutes.
75 YEARS AGO
A brain disease which has been attacking horses in the vicinity of Delphi the past week has killed horses of Frank Brewer, John Fisher, Thomas O’Farrell, W. G. Hawley and Warnie Mullendore. The team belonging to Mr. Brewer was valued at $500.
Queen McCormick Miller of Los Angeles, California won first and second and a special prize in the Los Angeles county fair this year. The quilts winning the prizes were pieced by Mrs. Elmer Cripe of Flora and Lenna Landis of Camden and quilted by the Wisehart sisters of Flora and by Mrs. Mary Swisher, 74 years old of Flora, 365 quilts were entered in the contest.
100 YEARS AGO
The Democrat is in receipt of the following letter telling of the recent trouble at Young America: Members of the Young America Baptist church offered to pay Mr. Keating $18.50, believing themselves in the wrong in having him fined. The charges of assault and battery, intoxication and provoking Charles Houk were found to be false. Mr. Keating was giving a slight of hand performance with his hat, and he, through a mistake, dropped his hat striking Miss May McCain on the shoulder. Mr. Houk seeing this, arrested Keating on charge of assault and battery. Mr. Keating soon showed them that assault and battery and slight of hand performance are two different things.
According to the December report of the weather bureau the December was the coldest in Indiana since 1876. The mean temperature for the month was 23 degrees, which is the lowest for thirty-three years. The warmest day in the month was December 4 when the mercury stood at 60 degrees. The coldest day was December 30, when the thermometer dropped to 8 degrees below zero. The total snowfall for the month was 8.2 inches.
