Barbara and Michelle Bess Barbara and Michelle Bess The inspiration to do something a little different can come from any source, unlikely or very familiar. Sometimes it does not matter from where an idea originates as much as what happens with it. Such is the case of a new program for seniors which will be offered at the Delphi Public Library.

A segment of the television show “60 Minutes” inspired local resident Michelle Bess to form a music group for seniors called “Off Our Rockers.” Bess told the Comet Friday she saw a chorus of seniors from Massachusetts, called “Young@Heart” perform songs from the recent past, such as James Brown and Jimi Hendrix and Sonic Youth. The group called itself “Off Our Rockers” and the average age of the members was 81.

Bess said her mother Barbara Bess moved to Carroll County about 15 years ago. Michelle moved to the community to help her mother eight years ago and has been on the lookout for activities that would help her mother continue to have a productive lifestyle as she aged.

Bess said after the “60 Minutes” program aired, a DVD of the group was released as a documentary. The Delphi library ordered a copy and after watching the entire documentary, Bess felt the nudge to organize a similar group in Carroll County for seniors.

“I thought it would be a great way to keep seniors active and have fun doing it,” she said.

The local program was developed to include people age 50 and older rather than limiting participation.

“We are hoping that we can reach out to seniors who need this kind of activity,” Bess said. “We’d really like to find some people with a musical background, too.”

“We just want everyone to have fun with it and laugh while they sing,” she added. “We aren’t going to be overly organized or formal.”

Bess said the group will sing songs that they are likely familiar with, such as “With a Little Help From My Friends” and “Help” by the Beatles, “The Secret Life” by James Taylor, “My Generation” by the Who, and “Don’t Be Cruel” by Elvis Pressley.

The call-out for participants is Jan. 27 at 2 p.m. in the Delphi library’s program room. For information contact Bess at (317) 874-6430 or Sara Daly- Brosman at (765) 564- 2929. For additional information about Young@Heart visit www.foxsearchlight.com/y oungatheart.
