Richard Welsh

Richard “Nub” Welsh, 76, of Flora, passed away at 7:10 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 7, 2010, at St. Vincent Hospital in Indianapolis.

Born April 4, 1933, in Goodland, he was the son of John Edward and Ruth O’Brien Welsh. He was a 1951 graduate of Goodland High School. His marriage was on June 25, 1955, in Goodland, to Ellen Marie Bokma, who survives.

Mr. Welsh worked at Heinold Hog Market in Goodland for eight years before becoming manager of Heinold Hog Market in Burlington. He was a manager there for 31 years before retiring in 1994 due to health reasons.

He and his wife resided in Goodland until 1967 when they moved to Flora.

Mr. Welsh, a U.S. Army veteran, served during the Korean Conflict. He was stationed in Germany.

He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Delphi and the Flora American Legion Post.

He liked to travel, fish and hunt.

Surviving with his wife are two daughters, Karen Southerland and Sandra Welsh, both of Indianapolis; a son, Patrick Welsh (wife: Marion) of Lafayette; two grandsons, Matthew Southerland and Morgan Welsh; three granddaughters, Paige Southerland and Sara and Emma Welsh; four brothers, Jack Welsh, Charles Welsh and Mike Welsh, all of Goodland and Tom Welsh of Crawfordsville; five sisters, Lois Reed of Rensselaer, Pat Luck of Remington, Doris Honegger of Monticello, Marilyn “Peg” Bell of Lafayette and Mary Antcliff of Florida; several nieces and nephews; and his faithful companion, his dog Penny, 5.

Preceding him in death were two sisters and a brother.

Services were held Monday at St. Joseph Catholic Church. Father Peter Vanderkolk officiated. Burial followed at Mt. Calvary Catholic Cemetery, Goodland.

Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association.

Arrangements were handled by Reinke Funeral Home, Flora.
