Former resident is self-taught artist
Marilyn McCormick
Oil artist Marilyn E. Mc- Cormick is basically self-taught. She began exploring her creative side in elementary school and on into high school while growing up in Delphi. Pencils, crayons, charcoal and pastels were the first “tools” she used.
After graduating from Butler University, she began working in merchandising in Indianapolis when she purchased a small box of beginner oil paints, a canvas board and produced her first oil painting. She still has that painting as a reminder of how it all began.
She continued with oil painting while teaching elementary school in Indianapolis. Several teachers as well as friends saw and bought her work, encouraging her to “keep painting.” Mc- Cormick expanded her talents to tole painting and working in acrylics.
After retiring from teaching she moved to Leavenworth, Kan., then to Albuquerque, N.M., and now resides in Colorado. She constantly keeps her bird feeders filled for the wide variety of birds and four-legged friends that come to her wilderness wonderland. Landscapes have been and continue to be the focus of her “painting adventures” as she calls them.
McCormick has entered and sold her original paintings and prints in area art shows where she has also won awards for her work. Occasionally, she does commission work and a print of one of those works is now hanging in a home in England.
Whatever the subject, she hopes the finished product reflects her response and inner connection to what she sees and feels as she paints.
McCormick is the daughter of the late Watson and Betty McCormick. Her father was an attorney and Carroll County judge. Her mother taught fifthgrade at Hillcrest Elementary School, while her grandfather, C. T. Amick, was school superintendent. Her uncle, Tom Mc- Cormick, was her high school English teacher. She still keeps in touch with her “roots” through a friend of her mother, Donnabell Sieber of Delphi.
