Cougar wrestlers finish 3-2 at Twin Lakes Super Duals
Twin Lakes hosted its annual Super Duals in front of 800 fans from 10 schools, including Carroll, during the holiday break.
Carroll was pitted against Gary Wallace, Twin Lakes, Caston, and Frontier. The Cougars ended up placing fifth out of the 10 teams. West Central won the event over rival Twin Lakes. North White and Caston finished ahead of Carroll while Frontier, North Judson, Taylor, Gary Wallace and Culver trailed the Cougars.
The Cougars had their ups and downs as they struggled with a day of injuries. They opened the duals against a much improved Gary Wallace team, winning 45-36. This match set the tone for the day which had the Cougars suffering their first serious injury. Freshman Braydon Kitchel (119) suffered a shoulder injury in an apparent illegal move by his competitor that forced him out of the competition. This loss forced the Cougars to forfeit the 119-weight class. Kitchel had a 9-4 record coming into the duals.
The highlight was watching Kameron Casto (171) win on a tremendous athletic stack pin. Jared Collins (160) battled hard in his match to a 7-2 point win. Anthony Pickett (130) showed his skills with a 16- 0 tech point win.
The Cougars had one of their worst matches of the season against the host Indians, losing 49-21. Trey Overholser (112) had the fastest take down and pin of the day for the Cougars in 1:10 in the first round against his Twin Lakes foe. Pickett (130) added to a good start with a pin victory in the third round. Collins (160) came out a winner in a tough 7-6 result in a well contested match.
The Cougars took on the Caston Comets in Match 3, losing 38-36. Cole Liggett (140) won on a well earned pin victory in the third round. Caston won the next four matches. Montana Gangwer (152) got on the mat after having won two forfeits in the first two matches. Gangwer scored an impressive pin victory in the second round after leading 9-0 on points. This match ended with Casto (171) having a shoulder injury that forced him to end his day and put the ice packs on.
Match 4 was a dual between Carroll and Frontier with Carroll winning 43-33. Freshman Gavin Hancock (125) won his first pin of his Cougar wrestling career. Nick Gamel (135) executed a second round pin and Tyson Ovalle (140) won a hard fought battle by points 8-0. The individual match of the day was Brandon Weber (285) winning on a pin late in Round 3. With about 10 seconds remaining Weber’s Falcon competitor succumbed to a fall and a full body take down and pin.
After determining the scoring from the morning session duals, Carroll ended up battling Culver for fifth place overall. The Cougars ended the day at 3-2 with a 48-36 victory. Collins (160) finished a good day at 5-0, winning on a pin. Dakota Underwood (103) battled into the third round and finally pinned his feisty opponent. Underwood had his best full match of competition of the season earning this victory.
Carroll improved to 12-6. Team medalists for the day finishing at 5-0 were Collins, Gangwer, and Overholser. Gangwer improved to 17-1, with Collins and Overholser, improving to 14-4. Underwood improved to 13-5.
The (12-6) Cougars travel to Caston on Thursday for a single match meet against the Comets. Lafayette Jeff’s Super Dual is scheduled for Saturday with larger schools to gain some presectional experience.
