Work has begun on the foundation for a new, permanent boat dock at Canal Park in Delphi.
The dock is being funded by a $400,000 grant from the American Recovery & Reinvestment Act. LaPorte Construction Co. is doing the work.
“First the contractor removed poor soil and replaced it with considerable quantities of crushed stone incased in metal gridwork,” explained Canal Association president Dan McCain. “A seawall that will look like planking will border the canal and in the middle will be the historic looking platform for loading passengers on the Delphi.”
McCain said the construction company is able to monitor the progress at this site 24/7. It can be accessed by computer from anywhere with a satellite “eye” on the top of the pole overlooking the dock.
Concrete was poured in December for the start of a new sidewalk that will lead from the Canal Center to an information circle. From that kiosk, the path will lead to a “toll booth” where boat tickets may be purchased. McCain said
there will be an ADA
passenger ramp down to the dock.
He said the dock and related features will be officially dedicated on Memorial Day weekend.
