A blessed Christmas to all was the message of the flora First Baptist Church at its Bethlehem Marketplace and manger scene Sunday afternoon. Guests first registered for the census and then walked through the candle lighted marketplace, greeted by a carpenter, pottery maker, weaver and tent maker, all busy at work in their shops. Roman soldiers patrolled the area. The shop owners, and men, women and children of the town all were attired in dress of the time. At the inn, guests were offered a drink and homemade bread. People were then called to witness the nativity scene and hear music and the reading of the Christmas story from the Bible. One hundred thirty came to be counted that day.

Of the various industries that flourished in pioneer Carroll county, there was one at least that history has forgotten. This was a factory long referred to as “the old chair factory,” located on the Wabash river about one and one-half miles below the Carrollton bridge. At about the time of the opening of the Wabash and Erie Canal or a little before, for owing to so much controversy over the building of the canal it was not completed as soon as many thought it would be, a Mr. Ralph Leigh with his wife and children came here from Ohio and settled at this spot on the Wabash river. Here a wide, deep hollow extends from the river back into the hills; with a natural landing here for boats and a swift little stream pouring itself down this hollow it was considered a god site for the factory. Immediately one was constructed, the swift stream utilized for power to operate it.
