Burlington continues to address water issues

Comet staff report

Burlington Town Council met for its regular December meeting last Tuesday.

According to town employees Steve and Fred Michael, the water runoff at the water plant has slowed down since the completion of the tiling and trenching work.

When asked about the town’s water report, Steve Michael replied that the town’s water system “is pretty clear.”

Steve said that he and Fred spent a fair amount of time looking in the storm drains following heavy rains and have identified problems in some places.

Council president Stan Moore suggested that a meeting be scheduled in January for the council and public works employees to meet with the engineer concerning the wastewater system.

After setting aside $1,000 for unforeseen expenses, park board president Milt Rodgers said that his board will spend $4,550 to replace fencing on the big ball diamond and $3,100 will be used to help complete work on the Community Club’s park building.

Rodgers also said that the park board will see that safety barriers are put in place on the sledding hill.

Moore asked for comments on a resident’s request to close Haun Drive to truck traffic. The concensus of the council was to leave Haun Drive open as is. They cited closing the road to truck traffic would create additional traffic on other roads and would not solve the problem.

Township Trustee Al Jackson said that he is receiving more requests for township assistance than in years past and has requested an additional appropriation for poor relief.

He said that he is pleased with the offers he has been receiving from groups and individuals to help those in need in the community.

“The need is not just this time of year,” he said, “but year-round.”

Joe Armstrong was re-appointed to the KIRPC board.

The current snow plowing contract was terminated and a new one drawn up for Darren Redding with an end date of Sept. 30, 2010.

The marshal’s report for November included 2 gun permits, 7 title checks, 25 tickets, 6 warnings, 3 accidents, 7 assists of other agencies, 2 case reports and 23 calls for service.

Marshal Jill Hammond reported that the defibrillator has been ordered.

The town’s 2010 salary ordinances were approved.

“The recent Christmas Walk was a lot of fun and great exposure for our businesses,” remarked Moore.

A special meeting to discuss golf cart issues will be held at 7 p.m. Jan. 5 in the town hall.

A year-end meeting will be held at 7 p.m. Dec. 22. The next regular meeting will be at 7 p.m. Jan. 12 in the Town Hall.
