Comet staff report

Miller Miller Carroll Junior-Senior High School student Andrew Miller is the recipient of the 2009 Richard G. Lugar Distinguished Student Leadership Award. It is presented annually to an Indiana high school senior by the Lugar Center for Tomorrow’s Leaders at the University of Indianapolis.

Senator Lugar is scheduled to present the award on Dec. 12 during his annual Lugar Symposium for Tomorrow’s Leaders at UIndy. The son of David and Tracy Miller of Burlington, Andrew is a member of Boy Scout Troop 144 and for two years has served as a junior firefighter for the Burlington Volunteer Fire Department. The BVFD named him Fireman of the Year in 2008. At Carroll, he is a letterwinner in track and cross country and has served as a class officer and member of the school’s Key Club and National Honor Society, among other activities.

The Richard G. Lugar Center for Tomorrow’s Leaders was established in 2007 at UIndy to build on the Lugar symposium’s three decades of promoting civic leadership among Indiana youth. The center coordinates the annual symposium as well as related events and programs for high school and college students. Lugar served on UIndy’s Board of Trustees from 1970 to 2002 and has conducted the symposium at the university since 1977.
