Canal Christmas comes this weekend
“ Old Fashioned Christmas at the Canal” can be experienced this weekend, Dec. 12 and 13. Visitors are invited to glimpse what life was like 150 years ago, during the canal period.
This will be the 19th year for the event, sponsored by Carroll County Wabash & Erie Canal Inc. Admission is free
Hours will be 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday and noon to 4 p.m. on Sunday at Canal Park, Delphi. All buildings in the park will be open during those hours.
Music will fill the air on Saturday at the Canal Center, with the following performances: Tonsil Klackers, 10 to 10:30 a.m.; Cougar Blues, 10:30 to 11 a.m.; blue grass band, 2:30 to 3:30 p.m.; and Gary Stanley Trombone Choir, 3:30 to 4 p.m. On Sunday, the Carroll County Community Band will play beginning at 1 p.m., and Sharon McKnight will provide music throughout the park. Also on Sunday, Kathy McGraw, in Victorian costume, will sing and entertain at the Reed Case House from 1 to 4 p.m. Dulcimer music will be featured at the park both days.
More than a dozen craftsmen will demonstrate 1800s skills and display hand-made items at the Canal Center both days. These items will include wooden toys, hand-made soap and baskets, potpourri, stained-glass items, Alpaca wool products, decorated gourds, and more.
In addition to the Case House, where tours are given, other places to visit will be the Interpretive Museum, log schoolhouse, blacksmith shop, and Bowen Cabin, which houses the Cabin Crafts Gift Shop. Some of the offerings in the gift shop will be blown glass ornaments, noodles, jams and jellies, and blown bead jewelry. New this year will be Carroll County post cards and a new selection of books about days of old. There will be storytelling for kids in front of the fireplace at the Bowen Cabin and in the log schoolhouse.
