Oracles defuse Bombers
Despite falling behind early, the Lady Oracles showed patience and poise under pressure to come back and take a lead that they held for the rest of the game. In its 44-38, Delphi trailed by as many as six points and led by as many as seven points. The game was up for grabs until the last play of the game.
Less than two minutes into the game the Bombers were in the lead 6-0, as the Oracles were getting into the timing of their offense. When they found their touch, Delphi roared back with eight consecutive points of their own. Dani Burge had a bucket and a pair of assists in the streak. Rensselaer held leads of 9-8 and 11-10 before Delphi ended with a 12-11 lead after one period.
The teams traded leads during much of the second quarter. Delphi finally took the lead for good at 17-16 on a Whitney Arion basket near the two-minute mark.
After halftime, Brittany Rhodes and Chanler Norman each scored and Delphi was up by five at 23-18. Jordayn Jargstorf and Burge extended the lead to its largest of the game at 29-21 entering the final quarter.
The Bombers still had plenty of fight left in them. They closed the gap to four at 32-28 in less than three minutes. A Burge pass led to an Arion trey to put a dagger into the Bombers’ chances. What the Oracle faithful thought was a deathblow turned out to be just a scratch. Rensselaer closed to within four points several times in the last minutes but could not ever get that one stop that would put them over the top into the lead. This is when Oracle teams of the past may have folded, but this year’s team held it together until the final horn sounded.
The Oracles improve their overall record to 4-2 and play at Twin Lakes on Wednesday.
Delphi’s JV lost 43-27.
