Last second shot lifts Sheridan over Carroll
Carroll traveled to Sheridan for a battle with the Lady Blackhawks but the game ended poorly for the Cougars when Jaidlin Delph made her fifth three-pointer of the contest as time expired to give the hosts a 39-36 victory.
The Lady Cougars started poorly - not hitting shots. Sheridan was hitting early and built an 11-7 first quarter lead. The Cougars made some shots early in the second period to overcome the early deficit. Back-to-back 3- pointers by Jess Yoder and Quinci Eller gave the Cougars the lead at 13-11 less than a minute into the quarter. Carroll built the lead to 19-11 before a 3-pointer by Sheridan cut Carroll’s lead to 5. The Cougars stayed ahead and at the halftime break were up 23-18.
Sheridan came out firing in the second half. After trading baskets with Carroll up 26- 20, Sheridan turned up the defensive pressure, cutting into the Cougar lead. Delph made back-to back 3s and a 2-pointer by Linden Daiss had Sheridan on top 28-26. From this point it was a back and forth game. Carroll held the 34-30 advantage at the stop.
The fourth quarter saw much of the same see-saw battle on the scoreboard. Sheridan took the lead on a Delph 3-pointer 35-34. A Daiss free-throw made it 36- 34. That was the only scoring until late in the game. Carroll was down by 2 with time running out. A drive and layup by Kate Hickner tied the score at 36 with less than 8 seconds to play. Sheridan inbounded and found Delph for her game-winner at the buzzer.
Carroll was led by Jess Yoder with 12 points and Quinci Eller with 11.
Last Wednesday, Carroll built an early first half lead and then took over in the second half to defeat the Lady Oracles of Delphi, 42-22. Abby Reinke led Carroll with 13 points and 13 rebounds.
