Carl A. Baker

Carl A. Baker, 90, of Flora, died Monday, Nov. 30, 2009, at St. Elizabeth Hospital, Lafayette, following a short illness. He had been hospitalized for two days.

Born Jan. 1, 1919, in Henry County, he was the son of Edgar A. and Hilda Binney Baker. He graduated from Rockfield High School in 1937. On Oct. 21, 1944, in Rockfield, he married Mildred Million, who survives.

Mr. Baker was a farmer in Jackson Township for 40 years, retiring in 1984.

A veteran of World War II, he served in the U.S. Army Air Corp from 1941 to 1944 with two and a half of those years in India.

He was formerly a longtime member of the Rockfield Presbyterian Church, where he served as elder, deacon and trustee. He was presently a member of the Flora United Methodist Church.

Mr. Baker was also a 50- plus year member of the Masonic Lodge No. 211, F. & A.M., a member of the Scottish Rite of Indianapolis, and a charter board member of the Carroll County United Fund.

Surviving with his wife are two sons, Ron Baker (wife: Sharon) of Lafayette and Rob Baker (wife: Carol) of Flora; five grandchildren, Kelly Walters (husband: Mike), Jodie Lacey (husband: Tim), Andrea Pfeiffer (husband: Matthew), Kristen Baker, and Lauren Baker; four stepgrandchildren; and 19 greatgrandchildren.

He was preceded in death by two sisters, Ruth Farley and Esther Baker; a brother, Donald Baker; and an infant brother, Roy.

Service will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday at the Flora United Methodist Church. Pastors Larry DeVos and Rex Charles will officiate. Burial will follow at Camden Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. today, Wednesday, at Baker Funeral Home, Flora, and one hour prior to the service at the church.
