Addition to Canal Park
This building, shown here being transported to Canal Park, is now located between the
Case House and Bowen Cabin. Volunteers prepared a concrete foundation that allows
the barn to overhang the bank so that the lower level opens to the canal. Such barns
were known as “bank barns.” This configuration provided access for merchandise,
farm animals or machinery on two levels, and was commonly used in canal days to load
and unload directly to or from boats. Now painted, its present-day use will be as a trailside
bicycle concession. Rental paddle boats will be available out of the lower level. The
small barn comes from Michigantown and was donated by the Clinton County Library
Board. It was located on land formerly owned by Ernie Avery. Avery, who still owns part
of the farmstead, gave the Canal Association an old platform farm scale. Located next
to the canal boat warehouse in Canal Park Annex, it will illustrate the weighing of products
prior to being shipped on the canal. Photo provided
