The Lady Oracles won a pair of games over the weekend to run their record to 3 wins and 1 loss for the young season, defeating North White 56-45 and Clinton Prairie 40-29. Earlier in the week they won at home, 48- 40, over Seeger.

In the game against the NW Vikings the Oracles were led by Jordayn Jargstorf and Dani Burge. Jargstorf scored 28 points to go along with 15 rebounds while Burge took care of the defensive end of the court by playing hounding defense on the Viking guards that resulted in five steals.

North White quickly had an 8-1 lead before the Oracles had barely warmed up. Whitney Arion finally put the ball through the net halfway through the first period to start Delphi. Once the Oracles began scoring they didn’t stop until the final horn. They scored 55 points in just 28 minutes.

Brittany Abbott hit a trey to allow Delphi to catch the Vikings at 11. North White fought that rally off and led 19-13 with four minutes left in the half. Jargstorf totaled five points during a streak of 12 straight points for the Oracles, who held a 27-21 lead at the half.

Trailing 28-27, Delphi’s Jargstorf hit a basket and free throw to put the Oracles up for good with 4:02 remaining in the third. Only a desperation heave for a three-pointer at the end of the third by the Vikings kept the lead under ten points (39-31) for the Oracles.

North White closed the gap to six points several times during the fourth, but each time the Oracles fought off the charge and were never really threatened to win going away.

Vs. Clinton Prairie

On Saturday night if you were expecting to see a lot of offense like the night before when over 100 points were scored, you were disappointed. Neither team, because of turnovers, could even get a shot off until after three minutes had run off the clock. Trailing 3-0 Burge and Whitney Arion, hit consecutive baskets just seconds apart to put the Oracles ahead 6-3 to start the second period.

In a repeat of the first quarter the Oracles couldn’t score for the first four minutes of play. Thanks to their defense they were still very much in the game, trailing only 9-6. In a game featuring aggressive defenses that resulted in numerous turnovers for both teams the halftime score was 13-11 in favor of the Gophers.

Whatever coach Dan Dawson said to the girls at the half he should have recorded because they came out of the locker room and put up 29 second half points. The Gophers led 15-13 when Burge sank a trey to jumpstart the Oracles and give them a lead they never surrendered. Trailing 21-17 to start the fourth, the Gophers were unable to match the offense of the Oracles. Since trailing 15-13 the girls had outscored the Gophers 15-2 in just over six minutes and had built an insurmountable 28-17 lead early in the final period.

In the end, the Gophers were able to overcome the Oracle’s domination on the boards, which led to many second chance points. The Oracles out rebounded the Gophers 40-30 and were led by Chanler Norman with eight.

The JV team was 0-2 for the weekend, losing to North White, 18-17 in overtime and to Clinton Prairie 22-14.

Vs. Seeger

Delphi opened the home section of their season with a 48-40 victory over the Seeger Patriots. The game wasn’t decided until the last period when the Oracles finally put the game out of reach.

Burge hit a trey to open the scoring for Delphi followed by a bucket by Jargstorf. Seeger erased the lead quickly with an eight point spurt to take an 8-7 lead into the second period.

After Burge tied the score by hitting one of a pair of free throws Brittany Rhodes put the Oracles ahead for good less than a minute later. Arion and Jargstorf each hit baskets to end the half. The Oracles were up 14-12.

Unlike the game at Pioneer the Oracles did a much better job of not shuffling their feet and turning the ball over needllessly. While they had eight first half turnovers only three were for traveling.

Delphi continued to play good defense in the third period. Seeger was unable to score until nearly four minutes had been played. By then the Oracles had opened an eight point lead, 20-12. After two and one-half quarters of minimal scoring both teams loosened up and started making plays on the offensive end of the court. In the last four minutes of the third Seeger scored ten points but still couldn’t close the gap with Delphi scoring eleven.

The final period started with the Oracles up by nine at 31- 22. The lead reached its biggest at 15, 37-22, when Rhodes scored at the 5:30 mark. A rare four-point play by the Patriots’ Brianna Hensley trimmed the lead to ten but the Patriots could get no closer than eight.

The JV team started the game with a three-point shot and ended the game with another trey on their way to a 26-24 win to even their record at 1-1.

Upcoming games feature the Lady Cougars visiting Delphi on Thanksgiving eve for an 8 p.m. varsity start time and Rensselear visits on Saturday at 1:30 p.m.
